Episode two follows tomorrow, with the full boxset on iPlayer now. So, not to every taste, but there’s much to enjoy in its cheeky panache. Made by Hartswood Films, it’s infused with the trademark dark, gruesome humour that characterised their reboots of Sherlock and Dracula. It focuses on the posh Anchor-Ferrers family, led by matriarch Matilda (Juliet Stevenson on superbly nervy form), whose visit to the family pile in Monmouthshire kicks off a succession of ever more terrifying events – not helped by the appearance of two detectives, Molina (Sacha Dhawan) and Honey ( Iwan Rheon), who aren’t entirely what they seem. But scriptwriter Megan Gallagher offsets this by utilising every trick in the gore-thriller playbook to joyfully ratchet up the impending horror of the bizarre case that Caffery is drawn into.
He’s a cop obsessed by the abduction, years before, of his nine-year-old brother because Wolf was the seventh book in the Caffery series, there’s lots of exposition shoehorned in initially. There’s plenty to sink your teeth into in this deliciously creepy six-parter marking the TV debut of crime novelist Mo Hayder’s protagonist Jack Caffery (Ukweli Roach).
